Joel had a bit of time off from working at the restaurant. Even on his days off, he couldn’t stay far away. Him and Rikki didn’t really have to be there every day but he didn’t really have much else to do. Since getting home a few months ago, things had been...complicated. He still hadn’t told his sister that he had actually been out of the Army for about a year now. After he was discharged, he went through a tough month. More then one black outs, needless fights and waking up in violent outrages, sweating and thrashing at anything in his way. When he attacked his friend he was staying with, that’s when he got checked into a VA facility for help. It was either that, or jail time. After eight months of treatment, he ended up back here in southern California, helping his sister run her parents restaurant. While some might find it tedious, he enjoyed throwing himself into the work. Before the Army, he had been a party boy-loved to drink, was on the wrestling team and enjoyed hunting back home with his mother. Now, he preferred to live a quiet life, finding himself again. Finding himself with new activities that were a little less risky and noisy. Certain sounds set him off and he stayed far away from drinking. Not even a celebratory drink when something great happened. When he felt things were overwhelming, Joel made his way down to the shore. The smell of the sea air always had a claming effect on him. A far cry from the country side he was used to until joining the military, and then the desert from being deployed. The heat here was nothing new to Joel. After donning a t-shirt and shorts, he made his way out the door. The dog tags and two bands he always wore flashed in the sunlight. One tag was his own and the other belonged to a buddy of his who died while deployed. His friend never left his mind wherever he went. Joel even kept in touch with Christian’s family. He felt like it was his responsibility considering they were in the same attack together. That played a part in his problems. After Joel had part his Jeep, he flicked the ignition off and slipped the keys into his pocket. It didn’t take long for him to find his way down the pier, the breeze causing a slight wave to his hair. Another deep breath of that salty air and he felt a wave of calmness spread through him. As his sandals moved across the well worn planks, he moved through a crowd of people. On the other side he bumped into a petite blonde. ”Oh, sorry.” He took a look at her and she seemed familiar. Probably from the restaurant. ”I think I’ve seen you at Shore Thing. I’m Joel.” Joel liked to meet the new people around this small coastal community. After all, he was thinking of making a life for himself here. outfit: herenotes: will find a code later & hope this post is ok. I know, cliche "bump into one another"
